ABOUT
Helping clients imagine homes and spaces they never want to leave.
Founded in Copenhagen in 2015, Black Architecture is an architecture and interior design studio creating bespoke residential, hospitality and commercial projects. We believe that architecture is more than the design of buildings—it is the design of everyday life. Every decision, from the overall spatial concept to the smallest detail, has the potential to influence how we live, move, gather and experience our surroundings.
Our ambition is to create spaces that remain meaningful long after the excitement of a new project has passed. Spaces that feel effortless to inhabit, respond naturally to the rhythms of everyday life and continue to reveal new qualities over time.
Designing the experience of living.
We believe the true value of architecture lies beyond aesthetics. While beautiful materials and carefully crafted details are important, they are only meaningful when they support the experience of living.
Rather than seeing a home as a collection of individual rooms, we approach every project as a carefully composed sequence of spaces. We consider how daylight changes throughout the day, how one room unfolds into the next, where a view should be revealed, where a moment of privacy should exist and how movement through the home can feel intuitive rather than prescribed.
The distance between the kitchen and the dining room, the arrival into a living space, the transition from inside to outside, or the glimpse of a garden at the end of a corridor—these are the moments that quietly shape everyday life. They are rarely noticed consciously, yet they define how a home feels to live in.
We design for those moments.
Transformation before addition.
Many of our projects begin with an existing building. Rather than asking how much can be added, we first ask how the architecture can work better.
By rethinking layouts, improving connections between spaces and introducing natural light where it matters most, we uncover possibilities that often already exist within the building. Sometimes a carefully positioned opening creates more value than an extension. Sometimes removing a wall changes the entire experience of a home.
For us, architecture is about revealing potential—not simply adding square metres.
A collaborative process.
Every project begins with listening. We invest time in understanding not only practical requirements, but also routines, ambitions and the way our clients aspire to live.
Architecture should never be imposed. It should emerge through dialogue.
Throughout the design process we work closely with clients, consultants and craftsmen, from the earliest sketches and concept development through detailing, tender documentation and on-site supervision. Remaining involved throughout the process ensures that the original vision is carried through to the finished project with clarity and consistency.
Lasting architecture.
We are drawn to architecture that feels calm rather than loud, timeless rather than trend-driven and generous rather than excessive.
Honest materials, thoughtful proportions and carefully considered details create spaces that age gracefully and become richer through use. Rather than following short-lived trends, we strive to create architecture that continues to feel relevant decades from now.
Ultimately, our work is not about creating buildings.
It is about creating places where everyday life unfolds naturally, where people feel connected to their surroundings and where architecture quietly enriches the way they live.
Danko Lekic - Founder & Architect
After graduating from the Royal Danish Academy of Architecture in 2010, I founded Black Architecture in 2015 with the ambition of creating a studio where every project is shaped through close collaboration and personal involvement. Alongside my own practice, I have collaborated with Norm Architects as a freelance architect, contributing to a range of residential and hospitality projects.
I enjoy working closely with my clients and believe the best projects are built on trust, openness and dialogue. Architecture is a deeply personal process, and understanding how people live is just as important as understanding the building itself.
Some of the most meaningful collaborations continue over many years, as projects evolve, families grow and new chapters begin. I consider these long-term relationships one of the greatest privileges of my profession.
Every project is an opportunity to create something unique—something that reflects the people it is created for and enriches the way they live.
